Can't get steel

Hello,
I want to get steel dust but I don't know how. I followed the instructions at the basic components website,but nothing happened. Please help me. I'd really appreciate that.

It's four coal surrounding an iron ingot.

I thought it was charcoal not coal...

Charcoal and coal are one and the same, they can be substituted for a good 90% of things I'd imagine.
