Are you supposed to get hurt when you break blocks in a sealed area?

Any time I am in a sealed area and break any blocks (not just ones that lead to a vacuum) it hurts my character and I was wondering what's up with that.

I think, for a very short time the sealing is gone. So there is no oxygen.

But if you're doing things like placing/removing blocks WITHIN a sealed area, it shouldn't affect it.
